Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat the oven to 325°F (165°C). Lightly grease a 2-quart casserole dish with 1 tablespoon of butter.

02

Step

In a large, heavy-bottomed sauté pan, melt 2 tablespoons of butter over medium-high heat. Add the cabbage and onions, season with kosher salt and black pepper. Stir to combine, then cover the pan and cook until the cabbage and onions are softened and slightly caramelized, approximately 10 minutes.

03

Step

Sprinkle the flour over the cabbage and onion mixture, stirring constantly to ensure it's evenly distributed. Cook for an additional 2 minutes, allowing the flour to lightly toast and eliminate any raw flavor.

04

Step

Slowly pour in the chicken broth, stirring continuously to prevent lumps from forming. Then, stir in the heavy cream. Bring the mixture to a gentle simmer, allowing it to thicken slightly, about 2 minutes.

05

Step

While the cabbage mixture simmers, bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a rolling boil. Add the egg noodles and cook according to package directions until al dente, about 5 minutes. Drain the noodles thoroughly.

06

Step

Add the drained noodles to the creamy cabbage mixture in the sauté pan. Stir gently to combine, ensuring the noodles are evenly coated in the sauce. Transfer the mixture to the prepared casserole dish.

07

Step

Dot the top of the casserole with the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter. Cover the dish with a lid or aluminum foil.

08

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes, or until the mixture is heated through and bubbly around the edges. Remove the cover during the last 10 minutes of baking to allow the top to lightly brown, if desired. Let it cool slightly before serving.

For a richer flavor, consider using brown butter instead of regular butter. Brown the butter in the sauté pan before adding the cabbage and onions.
Add a pinch of nutmeg to the cream sauce for a touch of warmth and complexity.
If you prefer a vegetarian version, use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently in the oven or microwave before serving.
