For a richer flavor, use freshly grated Parmesan cheese in addition to or instead of mozzarella. Try adding a pinch of red pepper flakes to the sauce for a little heat. If you don't have fresh basil, dried oregano or Italian seasoning can be used as a garnish. To prevent sticking, lightly grease the casserole dish before adding the ingredients. For a more intense garlic flavor, add the garlic during the last minute of cooking the onions.
