Follow The Directions

01

Step

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F (190 degrees C). Grease a 9x13 inch baking dish with butter. (5 minutes)

02

Step

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and translucent. (3-4 minutes)

03

Step

Whisk in flour and cook, stirring constantly, until golden brown. (2 minutes)

04

Step

Gradually pour in half-and-half and milk, whisking continuously to prevent lumps. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the sauce has thickened. (3-4 minutes)

05

Step

Remove from heat and season with salt, pepper, garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and paprika. Stir well to combine.

06

Step

Arrange half of the sliced potatoes in the prepared baking dish, overlapping slightly. Top with 3/4 cup of chopped ham. Sprinkle with 1/4 cup of Cheddar cheese and 1/4 cup of Monterey Jack cheese.

07

Step

Pour half of the cheese sauce evenly over the potato and ham layer. Repeat layers with remaining potatoes, ham, cheeses, and sauce.

08

Step

Cover the baking dish tightly with aluminum foil.

09

Step

Bake in the preheated oven for 40 minutes. Remove the foil and continue to bake until the cheese is melted and golden brown and the sauce is bubbling. (20-30 minutes)

10

Step

Let stand for 10 minutes before serving.

For a richer flavor, use heavy cream instead of half-and-half.
Ensure the potatoes are sliced thinly and evenly for uniform cooking.
Feel free to substitute different types of cheese, such as Gruyere or Swiss.
Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.

I used a mandoline to slice the potatoes super thin, and it made a big difference in the texture. Highly recommend!

I found that 40 minutes covered was too long. The potatoes were too soft. Next time I'll cover it for only 30 minutes.
